Helping Your TCK Say Goodbye
Saying goodbye is a defining experience for TCKs. How it is handled in childhood shapes how loss is processed for decades afterward.
Why Goodbyes Matter More Than Arrivals
Most families put significant energy into preparing for the arrival at a new post. School selection, housing, language lessons, cultural briefings. Far less energy goes into the goodbye. Research consistently shows that how TCKs say goodbye is one of the strongest predictors of how well they handle the transition and integrate at the destination.
- Have you allowed enough time in the departure phase for meaningful goodbyes, or is the logistics pressure crowding them out?
- Does your child have a ritual or a practice for marking the end of a chapter — something that belongs to them?
- Are you, as a parent, modelling that goodbyes are worth doing carefully and honestly?
- What does your child need to feel that the place and the people they are leaving were real and mattered?
