What is an Adult Third Culture Kid?

The TCK experience does not end at 18. Here is what it means to be an Adult Third Culture Kid and why the label still matters.

When the TCK Grows Up

Adult Third Culture Kids — ATCKs — are people who lived the TCK experience in childhood and are now navigating adulthood with that history shaping who they are. For many ATCKs, the defining moment is discovering the term itself — often in their twenties, thirties, or even later — and suddenly having language for experiences they had never been able to articulate.

Research consistently shows that ATCKs are highly educated, internationally oriented, and professionally successful. They are also more likely to experience rootlessness, relationship difficulties, and a persistent sense of not quite belonging anywhere — challenges that are easier to navigate once named.

Why the Label Still Matters in Adulthood

  • When did you first encounter the term ATCK, and what did it change for you?
  • Which aspects of your adult life make most sense when you understand them through the TCK lens?
  • What have you had to deliberately work on that most of your peers seemed to navigate naturally?
  • How does knowing you are an ATCK change how you parent, relate, or work?
