This phenomenological study explored early adult friendship formation in six ATCKs at a US university. Four difficulties were identified: a persistent restlessness, a constant desire for stimulation, a need to fill a void in friendships, and having a sense of multiple selves in multicultural contexts — a chameleon-like quality. The ATCKs in the study felt personal characteristics differed widely from nationals with whom relationships were built, hindering the ability to form and maintain friendships.
