About Here Everybody Moves: Using Relational Cultural Therapy with Adult TCKs
This paper explored the need for counseling services to help adult TCKs cope with the difficulties of adjustment to adult life. Key findings: few counseling services offer ATCK-specific services. Two recurring themes in adult TCK counseling are the inaccessibility of parents while serving overseas, and the parentification of the child — where children are expected to take on adult roles. The paper applies relational-cultural therapy (RCT) as a framework for working with ATCKs, arguing that disconnection and isolation — central TCK experiences — are precisely what RCT addresses.
