About Identity, Family and Faith: US TCKs Transition to College

This study explored the lived experiences of US missionary kids (MKs) transitioning to a US college for the first year. Using purposive sampling, participants were over 18, had lived outside the US for at least 3 years during childhood, attended the last year of high school overseas, and were in their first year of college. Five significant findings emerged: moving into college, a loss of cultural identity with the change of location, a re-defining of the word home, a changing but still central relationship to family, and a continued focus on the importance of faith. Reentry training was mentioned in passing as potentially helpful.
