About Loss and Grief Between and Among Cultures: The Experience of TCKs
This paper explores the dimensions of grief and loss experienced by third culture kids across multiple cultural transitions. The author argues that TCK grief is often hidden — not recognized or validated by the adults in a TCK's life because the moves are framed as exciting opportunities. Unresolved grief from repeated transitions accumulates and is frequently the root cause of presenting problems in adult TCK counseling. The paper has implications for counselors, parents, and organizations working with internationally mobile families.
